The two week Shopping Street challenge just ended in my class after a largely successful competition. I’m pretty excited about many of the unexpected outcomes that occurred as a result of this challenge.

I have a set of girls who are very competitive, especially if I’m involved in the competition.

The goal was to pass all levels of the shopping street game. When we first started the competition my girls could pass all the levels of Houston, but none of my students could pass the first level of Chicago. By the end of the two week challenge we had three girls who passed all the levels of New York.

Even once the girls passed the more challenging levels they continued playing the game as they wanted to achieve the bonus at the end of each level. One thing that kept my girls motivated was to have them organize their choices and keep track of the resulting outcomes. My students quickly realized that they could keep better track of their data if they only change one variable at a time.

This is in alignment with the science standards for middle grades. I also appreciated how this challenge took place outside my class time, but the discussions about the challenge were taking place in class and in the hall during passing. I have noticed a new appreciation for problem solving and strategic planning with students. My girls now have their sights set for a new challenge and another opportunity to beat their teacher on one of the fun games on Hooda Math.

The newest addition to Hooda Math.com is another Math Dress Up Game. This time the Math Dress Up game is including decimals and percents. Try it out for yourself. This game is quite difficult, so if you need to your students can play it in easy mode. In easy mode the player no longer has to worry about the percent off tags and focus on adding up the decimals. I hope you find this new math dress up game as a great way to solidify decimal and percent knowledge. Play Dress Up Sale today!

Skip counting is often used as a tool to work towards mastery of the multiplication table. In search for a game that helps students practice skip counting in a fun way, I came across The Counting Game at LearningPlanet.com. I use the game as a warm-up in the computer lab. My students must complete level 6 and have at least 5,000 points at the chosen skip counting number of the day. The Counting Game is not perfect for the usual skip counting for multiplication mastery, but it also can be used for addition number sense. The Counting Game forces students to think about adding single digits starting at random numbers. I often find my students struggle with this basic skill (for example 36 + 7), and The Counting Game helps them practice this in a fun and challenging way.
